Sound: B/B-

This was a spectacularly poor quality tape to my ears (not worth the B/B- rating, more like a D). To say I think that what I've put on here sounds ok is testament to how bad the original was, or how poor my skills are! I've included a tiny sample of the original Ife, so you can hear (OriginalIfeSample.flac).

=====================================

Restoration work: Main set.

Ife had digital clicks throughout to a degree that made it unlistenable. They have been removed.

There were many instances (again, only on Ife - a bad digital extraction down the line?) where for tiny fractions of a second, the channels swapped over from left to right and back again. After listening to the rest of the recording, it appears it originally came from a mono tape, and has over time gained the illusion of some stereo aspects by being copied in stereo down the generations. I've reverted it to mono and alleviated the problem on Ife.

A hum at 15526Hz ran throughout, now significantly reduced.

Occasional other pops and clicks removed that were of analogue providence - some (tape crackle?) remain.

Altered the volume level on Mtume and Maiysiha to be a little more similar to Ife.

Speed correction (very minor).

EQ.
Noise reduction (attempted before EQ, but it made the frequencies I also wanted to bring out a little less crisp, so decided to go after).

The music circulates together with another (poorer quality) recording which is probably from another date and venue -- when Dave Liebman and Dominique Gaumont were still in the band. Thanks to Greg Chappee for pointing this out.

Davis fired Dominique Gaumont in late December, and the Septet played a couple west coast dates before embarking on a Japanese tour: Keystone Korner, San Francisco (January 14-16); Troubadour Club, Los Angeles (January 17-19, 1975).
