Davis) (closing theme, applause) 0:30 The Sextet seems to have performed three sets per night during this engagement, so there may be recordings of the other two sets. In addition, the Sextet probably performed "Directions" at the beginning of this set. Some day, Sony/Columbia will get around to releasing this material commercially. As of late 2000, the plan was to release three 2-CD sets -- two sets from December 16 and one from December 17 (C2K 62110), two sets from December 18 (C2K 62114), and two sets from December 19 (C2K 85187). I have also seen reference to a single six-CD set, however. In any case, the track listing here is taken from Columbia press materials -- although I have not followed Columbia in referring to Jarrett's solo at the beginning of "Funky Tonk" as "Cellar Door Improvisation," or in referring to "Funky Tonk" itself as "Inamorata." Why multiply entities beyond necessity? Chick Corea and Dave Holland left the Davis Septet to form Circle in late September, after returning from a brief post-Isle of Wight European tour. Davis hired Michael Henderson (then 19 years old) as Holland's replacement. For some reason this newly constituted Sextet was never brought into the studio. I have not been able to find any ads or reviews for live dates prior to this four-day engagement at the Cellar Door (December 16-19), though there are some "mystery tapes" in circulation that probably date from this period. The Sextet was also booked at the Loyola Fieldhouse, New Orleans (December 20).
