There were two shows each night. Columbia recorded both nights, but this show remains unissued. This two-night gig is Wayne Shorter's last as a member of the Sextet. (He did remain with Davis for a studio date on March 17.) Between these two shows Bill Graham brought in a Sabrett hot dog vendor off the street to feed the bands, the crew, and some members of the audience. An off-speed excerpt (12:32) from the middle of the second concert circulates as an "unknown 1970" session. It includes: Applause (0:22 - spliced in, only a few seconds in original) Fragment (4:02) of Miles Runs the Voodoo Down (= 10:32-14:56 of master) I Fall in Love Too Easily (1:29) Fragment (1:25) of Sanctuary Fragment (3:21) of Miles Runs the Voodoo Down (= 0:08-3:29 of master) Fragment (1:52) of It's About That Time (= 2:50-4:42 of master) The Davis Sextet maintained a busy touring schedule throughout this period: Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor (February 21); Fillmore East, New York (March 6-7); Fillmore West, San Francisco (April 9-12); Both/And Club, San Francisco (April 28). In addition to all this touring, Davis had various groups in the studio throughout the first half of 1970 -- fourteen dates in the first half of the year! |
